Installing the USB Software

NOTE: Do not connect the modem to the computer prior to installing the USB driver.

Step 1 of 7

• Insert the manufacturer's disk that came with the modem.
• If the installation program doesn't start automatically, use Windows Explorer to find the contents of the CD and double click the file named Setup.exe

• You must read and agree to the terms of the software license
• Click the Accept button to continue

• The program notifies you that it will search for previous versions of the Siemens USB driver software installed on your computer. If a previous version is found it will be automatically removed
• Click the Next >> button to continue

Step 4 of 7

• When the search is complete the program will ask you to confirm that you wish to install the USB driver
• Click the Next >> button to continue
• A progress bar will be displayed while the files are copied to your computer

• After the USB driver files have been copied to your computer one of the following screens will be displayed. You must now connect the modem to the computer using the USB cable provided. Ensure that the modem is correctly connected to the power supply and switched on. See Connecting the Cables

• When the modem is detected by the installer the USB driver will be installed

• Click the Finished button to complete the installation process

Your computer will now restart.

You are now ready to configure the modem to connect to the Optus DSL Broadband Service.

Physical Connection

Telephone Filters

A telephone filter must be installed on each of the telephony devices that share the same telephone number as your Optus DSL Broadband service. These include:

• telephones
• fax machines
• dial-up modems
• answering machines
• some digital pay TV equipment
• any other similar device.

Place a filter on all telephones or similar devices at your premises by unplugging the telephone cord and placing a filter between the phone and the wall socket as shown.

If you have a home monitoring service (Back to Base security or medical alarm) that uses the same phone line as your DSL service, it is your responsibility to arrange for a central filter to be installed in your premises. If you do not do this, you will experience problems with your DSL connection and your monitoring service. If you require further information about central filters please call Optus DSL Broadband Customer Service.

Connecting the Cables

The connection sockets at the rear of your Siemens modem look like this:

To connect your modem.

• Connect the USB cable between the modem's USB port and a spare USB port on your computer.
• Connect the DSL cable between the DSL port on the modem and the telephone wall socket. (You will need a double adaptor if you also use this wall socket for your telephone.)
• Plug the jack from the power adaptor into the modem power socket labelled "12VDC" and plug the adaptor into a power source.

Starting the Modem

• Connect power to the modem
• Turn the modem on by pressing the power switch on the rear panel, marked "I/O".
• The Power LED will blink and then turn steady green.
• The USB light will blink and then remain steady green.
• The DSL LED will blink during initialisation and then remain steady green once an ADSL connection has been established.

If your modem is unable to establish an ADSL connection check the following:

• Your modem is powered on and the Power LED is solid green. (See Starting the Modem)
• Ensure all cables are connected correctly (See Connecting the Cables)
• Contact Optus DSL Broadband Customer Support

PC Settings for Windows 98 / ME

NOTE:
The following settings are for direct modem to PC connection. If you wish to use your Optus DSL Broadband service with a home or office LAN please contact your network administrator or computer technician.

• Click Start select Settings then click Control Panel

• Double click on Network

• Select TCP/IP and click on Properties

• Select the IP Address tab
• Select Obtain an IP address automatically radio button and click OK
• Click OK and Close all open windows

• Select Yes to restart computer

Your PC is now ready for you to configure your modem.

Configure Your Modem

NOTE
If you are using an Optus supplied Siemens SpeedStream 4200 modem, you can view your modem settings here.

Accessing the Siemens SpeedStream 4200 Configuration Utility

To avoid conflicts with any previous configuration the modem must first be restored to factory default settings.

With the modem switched on press and hold the Factory Reset button. The Power LED will blink green. Release the Factory Reset button as soon as the Power LED begins to blink. The Factory Reset button is located at the rear of the modem. (See Connecting the Cables) HINT: The button is recessed an you will need a sharp object to press it.

• Launch Internet Explorer on your PC.
• Connect to the Siemens SpeedStream modem by entering http://192.168.254.254 - the modem's default IP address - in the Address field of Internet Explorer, then click the Go button.

The following Gateway Administration Setup screen will appear. You may add this page to your Favorites for easy access later.

You will be asked to set the modem password for the first time.

NOTE: Do NOT enter your Optus DSL Broadband username and password here.

• Enter the default username "admin" in the User Name field
• Enter the password "admin" in the New Password field
• Enter the same password "admin" in the Confirm Password field
• Click the radio button next to the option Require admin login to access configuration pages
• Click the Save Settings button

After a brief delay the ISP Password page will be displayed

If you are unable to connect to the modem check the following:

• Physical connections (See Connecting the Cables )
• PC IP settings (See PC Settings for Windows 98 / ME )
• Disable any Proxy Server settings (Located in Internet Explorer Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab > LAN Settings)

You do not need to provide any information on the ISP Password page.

• Click on the word Tools in the blue menu of options on the left side of the page. An expanded set of options will be displayed.
• Click Interface Map in the list of options that appeared below the word Tools.

The Interface Map page looks similar to the following picture. The colours of some elements on the page may vary from the example provided.

• Click on the small box at the right of the diagram. In the picture (below) the box is indicated by a blinking red lasso.
• The WAN Interface Configuration Wizard will commence on the following page

The WAN Interface Configuration Wizard leads you step by step through the task of providing the information necessary for the modem to connect to the Optus DSL Broadband Service. In most cases the default settings are satisfactory. The remainder of these steps demonstrate the WAN Interface Configuration Wizard and provide you with the information needed to configure your modem successfully.

The first page of the WAN Interface Configuration Wizard is titled ATM Settings

• Enter the numeral "8" in the VPI: field
• Enter the number "35" in the VCI: field
• To Select the Encapsulation Type, click the radio button next to the option LLC
• Click the drop down menu titled Select the Traffic Class: and select the Unspecified Bit Rate option
• Leave all other fields blank
• Click the Next >> button

The second page of the WAN Interface Configuration Wizard is titled Protocol Selection

• Click the radio button next to the option PPPoE
• Click the Next >> button

The third page of the WAN Interface Configuration Wizard is titled PPPoE Type

• Click the radio button next to the option Client Only
• Click the Next >> button

• Click the Next >> button

The fifth page of the WAN Interface Configuration Wizard is titled User Information

• Enter your Optus DSL Broadband Username in the Username field
• Enter your Optus DSL Broadband Password in the Password field
• Click the Next >> button

Note: You will find your Optus DSL Broadband username and password on the letter you received with your self-installation kit.

The sixth page of the WAN Interface Configuration Wizard is titled PPP Options

• Ensure that the checkbox next to the Auto-Connect on Disconnect option is checked
• Ensure that all other checkboxes are clear
• Click the Next >> button

The seventh page of the WAN Interface Configuration Wizard is titled PPP Static IP. You do not need to provide any information on this page.

• Ensure that the optional Static IP Address field is clear
• Click the Next >> button

The eighth page of the WAN Interface Configuration Wizard is titled Interface Options

• Ensure the checkbox next to the Use Firewall option is clear
• Ensure the checkbox next to the Use Attack Detection System option is checked
• Ensure the checkbox next to the Use Universal Plug-n-Play option is clear
• Click the radio button next to the disabled option to disable RIP
• Under the title NAT/NAPT, click the checkbox next to the NAPT option
• Click the Next >> button

The ninth page of the WAN Interface Configuration Wizard is titled Connection Name

• Enter PPPoE 8/35 in the field under the title Enter a name to use for this connection:
• Click the Next >> button

• Click the Finish button

The Interface Map screen will be displayed again. You do not need to provide any information on this page.

• Click Reboot in the list of options below Tools in the blue menu of options on the left side of the page

NOTE: If you cannot see the word Reboot then click the word Tools in the blue menu to display the expanded set of options

• Ensure the checkbox next to the Reset to Factory Defaults option is clear
• Click the Reboot button

The modem will now shutdown and automatically restart using the new settings. This process takes about 45 seconds.

When the modem has restarted it will attempt automatic connection to the Optus DSL Broadband Service. When it has established a connection the following screen will be displayed.
