To install and configure your modem for your Optus DSL Broadband service follow the steps below.
Physical connection
Telephone Filters

A telephone filter must be installed on each of the telephony devices that share the same telephone number as your Optus DSL Broadband service. These include:
- telephones
- fax machines
- dial-up modems
- answering machines
- some digital pay TV equipment
- any other similar device
Place a filter on all telephones or similar devices at your premises by unplugging the telephone cord and placing a filter between the phone and the wall socket.
If you have a home monitoring service (Back to Base security or medical alarm) that uses the same phone line as your DSL service, it is your responsibility to arrange for a central filter to be installed in your premises. If you do not do this, you will experience problems with your DSL connection and your monitoring service. If you require further information about central filters please call Optus DSL Broadband Customer Service.
Connecting the cables
The connection sockets at the rear of your NetComm NB1300 modem look like this:

To connect your modem:
- Plug the power pack cable into the modem power socket labelled POWER and plug the power pack into a power point
- Connect the Ethernet cable between the Ethernet port on your Mac and the modem's Ethernet LAN Connection port
- Connect the DSL cable between the ADSL port on the modem and the telephone wall socket (you will need a double adaptor if you also use this wall socket for your telephone).
Starting the modem:
- When power is first applied, verify that both the Power LED and Ready LED are on
- The RDY LED will turn off after 5 seconds
- After approximately 10 seconds, verify that:
- The RDY LED will flash which indicates that the modem is ready for use
- The LAN LED will only light when an Ethernet cable is connected and a successful LAN connection is made
If your modem is unable to establish an ADSL connection check the following:
- Your modem is powered on and the Power LED is solid green. (See Starting the modem)
- Ensure all cables are connected correctly (See Connect your modem)

Settings for OSX
NOTE: Macintosh OSX is ready to use your Optus DSL Broadband connection by default. This section describes how to ensure your computer is configured with the appropriate values to connect.
To verify your network settings:
- Open System Preferences
- Click the Show All button from the top menu
- Under the Internet & Network section, click on the Network icon
- In the Location dropdown, confirm Automatic is selected
- In the Show dropdown, check Built-in Ethernet is selected
- Click the TCP/IP tab
- In the Configure dropdown, check Using DHCP is selected
- Check that the DNS, IP Address and Router fields are blank
- If any changes have been made, click Apply Now to save those changes
- If no changes are required, simply close the window
Configure your modem
Accessing the NetComm NB1300 configuration pages
To avoid conflicts with any previous configuration the modem must first be restored to factory default settings.
- Launch Safari or your preferred browser
- Connect to the NetComm NB1300 modem by entering http: //192.168.1.1/ - the modem's default IP address - in the Address field, then press the Return key
You will be prompted to enter a username and password.
NOTE: Do NOT enter your Optus DSL Broadband username and password here.
- Enter the modems default username 'admin'
- Enter the modems default password 'password' then click OK
The Quick Configuration screen will appear.
You may wish to add this page to your Bookmarks for easy access later.
If you are unable to connect to the modem check the following:
- Physical connections (See Connecting the cables)
- IP settings (See Settings for OSX)
- Disable any Proxy Server settings (Located in System Preferences > Network > Proxies)
Optus DSL Broadband modem configuration
Access the NetComm NB1300 modem pages as instructed above.
Select Quick Configuration from the menu on the left side of the screen.
Enter the following details:
- Enter 'Optus DSL Broadband' in the Service Name field
- Enter your Optus DSL Broadband username in the Username field
- Enter your Optus DSL Broadband password in the Password field
- From the WAN Type field dropdown menu choose PPPoE LLC
- Enter 8 in the VPI field
- Enter 35 in the VCI field
- From the BRIDGE mode field dropdown menu choose Disabled
- Click the Submit button to accept the changes
Select Save Setting and Reboot from the menu on the left of your screen. A new page will load.
Click the Save & Reboot button from the Save settings and reboot row of the main screen.
Your modem will connect to the Internet automatically on rebooting. This will take approximately 1 minute.
When the ADSL connection has been successfully re-established, the ADSL: Link/Act LED indicator will light steady green. (See Quick Diagnostics)
Click the Refresh button on your browser to reload the configuration page.
NOTE: the details in the Connection Status field under PPP Information at the bottom of the screen. The Connection Status details will appear as Connected once a valid Internet connection has been established.
If your modem is unable to connect to the Internet:
- Check you have entered the correct username and password and all configuration details have been entered correctly. (See Optus DSL Broadband modem configuration)
- Check your modem has re-established an ADSL connection after rebooting and saving your details. The ADSL LED will blink during initialisation and then remain solid green once an ADSL connection has been established. (See Quick Diagnostics)
- Click on the Connect button and note the details in the Connection Status field
