To install and configure your modem for your Optus DSL Broadband service follow the steps below.

Physical connection

Telephone Filters

A telephone filter must be installed on each of the telephony devices that share the same telephone number as your Optus DSL Broadband service. These include:

  • telephones
  • fax machines
  • dial-up modems
  • answering machines
  • some digital pay TV equipment
  • any other similar device

Place a filterĀ on all telephones or similar devices at your premises by unplugging the telephone cord and placing a filter between the phone andĀ the wall socket.

If you have a home monitoring service (Back to Base security or medical alarm) that uses the same phone line as your DSL service, it is your responsibility to arrange for a central filter to be installed in your premises. If you do not do this, you will experience problems with your DSL connection and your monitoring service. If you require further information about central filters please call Optus DSL Broadband Customer Service.

Connecting the cables

  • Plug the power cable into the modem power socket labelled 12V AC 1A
  • Connect the Ethernet cable between your Ethernet port on your Mac and the modem's Ethernet port
  • Connect the cable between the ADSL port on the modem and the telephone wall socket (you will need a double adaptor if you also use this wall socket for your telephone).

Starting the modem

  • Connect power to the modem
  • The Power LED should light up green.(See Quick Diagnostics)
  • The ADSL LED will blink during initialisation and then remain solid green once an ADSL connection has been established

If your modem is unable to establish an ADSL connection check the following:

  • Your modem is powered on and the Power LED is solid green. (See Starting the modem)
  • Ensure all cables are connected correctly (See Connect your modem)
  • Contact Optus DSL Broadband Customer Support

Settings for OSX

NOTE: Macintosh OSX is ready to use your Optus DSL Broadband connection by default. This section describes how to ensure your computer is configured with the appropriate values to connect to Optus DSL Broadband.

To verify your network settings:

  • Open System Preferences
  • Click the Show All button from the top menu
  • Under the Internet & Network section, click on the Network icon
  • In the Location dropdown, confirm Automatic is selected
  • In the Show dropdown, check Built-in Ethernet is selected
  • Click the TCP/IP tab
  • In the Configure dropdown, check Using DHCP is selected
  • Check that the DNS, IP Address and Router fields are blank
  • If any changes have been made, click Apply Now to save those changes
  • If no changes are required, simply close the window

Configure your modem

Accessing the D-Link 504 configuration pages

  • Launch Safari or your preferred browser
  • Connect to the D-Link 504 modem by entering http://192.168.0.1/in the modem's default IP address field, then press the Return key

You will be prompted to enter a username and password.

NOTE: Do NOT enter your Optus DSL Broadband username and password here.

  • Enter the modems default username 'admin'
  • Enter the modems default password 'admin' then click OK

The Quick Configuration screen will appear.

You may wish to add this page to your Bookmarks for easy access later.

If you are unable to connect to the modem check the following:

Optus DSL Broadband modem configuration

Access the D-Link 504 modem pages as instructed above.

Select Quick Configuration from the menu on the left side of the screen.

Enter the following details:

  • From the Connection Profile dropdown menu ensure AU_PPPoE VPI=8, VCI=35, Router with PPPoE is selected
  • Enter your Optus DSL Broadband username in the Login User Name field
  • Enter your Optus DSL Broadband password in the Login Password field
  • From the Authentication dropdown menu select PAP
  • From the Connect On Demand dropdown menu select enabled
  • Enter 0 in the Idle Time field
  • Click the OK button to accept changes

The a new page will load.

  • Select the Save Changes and reboot system now radio button
  • Click the OK button to save changes and reboot the modem

Your modem will connect to the Internet automatically on rebooting. This will take approximately 1 minute.

When the ADSL connection has been successfully re-established, the ADSL: Link/Act LED indicator will light steady green. (See Quick Diagnostics)

Click the Refresh button on your browser to reload the configuration page.

NOTE: the details in the Connection Status field under PPP Information at the bottom of the screen. The Connection Status details will appear as Connected once a valid Internet connection has been established.

If your modem is unable to connect to the Internet:

  • Check you have entered the correct username and password and all configuration details have been entered correctly. (See Optus DSL Broadband modem configuration)
  • Check your modem has re-established an ADSL connection after rebooting and saving your details. The ADSL LED will blink during initialisation and then remain solid green once an ADSL connection has been established. (See Quick Diagnostics)
  • Click on the Connect button and note the details in the Connection Status field
  • Contact Optus DSL Broadband customer support

Quick diagnostics

PowerSteady green light indicates the unit is powered on.
StatusLights steady green during the ADSL negotiation phase. Once the connection status has been settled, the light will blink green.
ADSL: LinkSteady green light indicates a valid DSL connection. This will light after the ADSL negotiation process has been settled.
ADSL: ActBlinking green light indicates an active DSL network connection.
Ethernet: LinkSteady green light indicates the modem has successfully connected to the Mac via Ethernet.
Ethernet: ActBlinking green indicates data being transmitted or received via Ethernet.
